Karín helped give visibility to Asian American activism when she edited and introduced the anthology The State of Asian America: Activism and Resistance in the 1990s (South End Press, 1994). Together with Ronald Takaki’s classic history text Strangers from a Different Shore, The State of Asian America served as the basis for the 1995 National High School Exam on Asian American Studies. This book received the Gustavus Myers Center Award for the Study of Human Rights in North America.

In 1997, Karín was featured with four other writers in the February/March issue of A Magazine.
